Since the 1960s
This is the year when the first regular truck traffic begins. In co-operation with DATRA, Ålborg and Århus (later TK Nord, then ASG and now Danzas), truck traffic starts up from Vejle bound for the rest of Scandinavia and it is now possible to send goods to Scandinavia by truck – rather than by ship via Copenhagen.
DFDS stops its coaster route between Vejle and Copenhagen. The route has not been profitable for some time as trucks are gradually taking over goods volumes.
The Fellowship co-operation emerges in the wake of the merger between Norddeutscher Lloyd and Hapag. Six companies join and these represent the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd in Denmark. Having been introduced at the end of the 1960s, containers have rapidly replaced the conventional sea-routes to large continental ports.
Otto Hansen & Co. together with the Fellowship companies and Transit Transport Flensburg, found DTG A/S in Padborg. The Danish-German border at Padborg is important for truck traffic to the rest of Europe and we want to participate actively in this development.
The last coaster service from Hamburg/Bremen stops sailing to Vejle. All overseas goods are now sent in containers or directly on trucks to the major ports.
Otto Hansen & Co. establishes a splendid cooperation with Transit Transport Flensburg (TTF). The agreement represents the start of our present European traffic business. Cooperation with TTF lasts for more than 15 years until TTF decides to establish themselves in Denmark with competing products.
The company celebrates 125 years on Sydkajen (south side of Vejle port). At the same time there is a change in management: Jens Hansen, who has been employed since 1983, takes over the daily management after his father, Svend Hansen, who has managed the company for more than 40 years.
The opening of the European market speeds up development of truck traffic during the early 1990s. Customs formalities are eradicated and free passage of goods increases trade and transport.
The change in management is completed as Jens Hansen becomes sole owner of the company.
Otto Hansen & Co. becomes the Danish partner in Online System logistics, a cooperation of 58 independent European transport companies who operate a Hub & Spoke system.
After 136 years on Vejle Port, in January the company moves to a new facility on Edisonvej in the northern industrial area of Vejle. The new facility is designed to allow for further development in our activities over the coming years.
The same year the company is appointed agent of Emery Worldwide in West Denmark, and our air freight and courier activities begin.
After only 11 months on Edisonvej, we extend the warehouse with 2000m2 extra capacity to house our expanding logistics activities.
Later that year we become partner in United Shipping Inc., a worldwide alliance of 80 independent shipping companies.
Well, who knows ?? We have started well and we will think of something.!
The law for Eastern Europe’s membership and admission in the EU has been passed and we want to participate from the start. The first partners are in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic and the transports begin.
We decide to associate with the CargoLine co-operation in Europe and the first transports roll in the month of May, at the same time as we collect goods at CargoLine’s central HUB in Fulda. Cargo-Line partners are much more internationally oriented and just a little larger than our previous partners, and therefore the will to invest and the need to act on changing market conditions is available, giving us and our customers a better deal in a long-termed partnership than we have had before. We terminate our co-operation with the ONLINE-partners at the end of the year.
We become IATA Cargo Agent in August and at the same time stop co-operating with Emery/Menlo. We are now using the United Shipping agents on most airfreight destinations together with selected partners, especially in China and the Far East.
From the first of January 2006 we are fully integrated with CargoLine all over Germany and on most European destinations. Our buildings on Edisonvej are sold to an investment company, and we re-rent them for the next years, until expected move to larger buildings.
We open a branch with 4 employees in Copenhagen to move physically closer to our customers on Sjælland (Sea Land).
In March we buy a 82.000 m2 building site close to the highway, which, in the long run, shall become our new location. Contemporary we sell our Sea and Air activities, as we will now fully concentrate our business on expanding our road transport and logistics. In October the branch in Copenhagen is closed due to the general economic recession and crisis, and all activities are now situated in Vejle exclusively.
The CargoLine-partners broadens into Eastern Europe and start a cooperation with Militzer & Münch in 19 countries, which strengthen our traffics to Eastern Europe and the Baltics, to Northern Africa and the western Middle East.
